Inside Delta Force The Story of America Elite Counterterrorist Unit Eric Haney Books Reviews

  • This book has been redacted from its original publication. It lacks all of the mission details from the original publication yet has no "second edition" or "edited copy" notice anywhere on the book... Very disappointed and somewhat aghast that the book could be redacted in such a way, makes you wonder what powers that be would want this...? There was a fair bit of indirect criticism of the CIA and American foreign policy in the first edition... Just saying...
  • A massive read and look into the Delta Force.

I actually just used the Audible version of this and was intrigued with the subject matter.

Was blown away by what I learned (i.e. that operatives were taught by thieves or were trained to live as practical terrorists). Very cool!
It also gave some really cool behind the scenes details of missions/operations from around the world.

Listening to it as one big story was a great experience. I felt connected to the people and could visualize the journey!

  • Haney served 20 years in the US Army, 8 of those in Delta. This book caused a stir when published, as other members stated Haney embellished his own roles, and revealed too many tactics, techniques, and procedures. And that's also the impression of this reader (I read a paperback version in 2011).

After a four page introduction, the first quarter of the book is his selection into the unit. The next quarter is training and exercises to get Delta to operational status. The second half of the book are his operational missions Eagle Claw/ Desert One, at least 3 missions in Beirut, several in Central America, Grenada, and Panama. He probably exaggerates a bit during these retellings. For some reason, he does not present these in chronological order. As for Eagle Claw, like Beckwith ("Delta Force") , Haney writes Delta was initially ready in January, and the weather was good, but the politicians delayed and delayed until April, when the weather was not as good.

I've seen all but maybe two episodes of the TV show "The Unit", and many incidents in the series were taken directly from this book.

Published in 2002, Haney had already written it before September 11th, and has only a two page post script to address the on-going war against terrorism he had already been fighting, post September 11th.
  • Haney did a great job in helping us understand a little bit about SFOD-D and what it does. Delta are the quiet professionals who don’t kiss and tell so it’s hard to understand them in contrast to DEVGRU. This book fills in a few questions. This is a must read to understand how America’s tip of the spear works.
  • I`m reluctant to perchase this type of book because they are often boring with too much background history that I ususally find myself skipping over. This book is different. Though the first half of the book is about the selection/training process that whittled down over 170 Green Berets, Rangers etc to a dozen is well written and entertaining to read. The training itself has some unconventional elements that give inight to how these soldiers carry out such diverse missions. The book is also needed to better understand what you are watching if you watch the TV series "The Unit". Thank you Eric Hanley for writing this book and bringing some well earned apprication to this very special group of American Soldiers.
  • It was an excellent inside read on the beginnings of "Delta Force" by a key player who was there. Seeing as how Delta was modeled after the British SAS I was pleased to see "our guys" putting just as much effort into finding low tech common sense solutions to solving terrorist scenarios oft times avoiding the American penchant for unnecessary, but, big, sexy, expensive technology. Haney shows the importance that the unit places in not being "a breed apart" but as a force multiplier for the Green Berets, the Rangers, and the infantry. For that matter, as he explains, the Secret Service, the State Department, the F.B.I., the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker. The variety of skills the Deltas amass tier one expertise in is truly impressive. I better understand now what the Delta operator meant on T.V. when he said that they were never told exactly what skills the evaluators were looking for in order to be selected. "They accept not the 'best' guy but the 'right' guy." I just wish there were more excellent books like this on the Delta Force. They are very close mouthed on the subject. I do, however, understand the wisdom of not going Hollywood like the Navy Seals. Their lives can be on the line.
