Don't mess with the hothead--or he might just mess with you. Slater Ibanez is only interested in two kinds of guys the ones he wants to punch, and the ones he sleeps with. Things get interesting when they start to overlap. A freelance investigator, Slater trolls the dark side of Los Angeles, rooting out insurance fraud, not afraid to use whatever means necessary to get things done, and not about to hold back with his fists. A queer antihero for a new age, Slater walks the line between ordinary life and the frayed fringes of society, keeping his balance with the jobs that his employer, Della, throws his way, and the back-channel support he gets from his idiot cop ex-boyfriend, Conrad. In this introductory novel in the series, Slater runs surveillance on an injured tech worker, soon finding that there are secrets lurking beneath the surface at his company. How do they generate so much revenue without employing anyone? Why does the founder spend so much time at the border? And why does a tech company need such heavy security? Tangling with blackmailers, party girls, late-night hookups with a gamut of guys, and a lot of bourbon, Slater uses his wits and a strong right hook to sort out bad from worse.

"I took a chance on this book, forgot I had gotten it and then when I started reading it - I finished it in one sitting! It draws you in from the first page. The main character Slater is kind of a sexy, macho, arrogant and self destructive guy all rolled in to one. He seems to believe everyone else is always wrong or stupid and it works for his character. He also shows signs of weakness.....especially when it comes to his ex boyfriend Conrad who I suspect still has some feelings for him. It's so important for an author to spend time on describing the physical location of where a story is taking place. Whether it's a city or state or country. It becomes an important focal point and character in the story. In this case the location is in and around different neighborhoods in Los Angeles. This is handled expertly throughout the book. I rarely buy or finish books that take place in a fictitious location as I think the story really lacks an important element. All the characters in this book are well defined and real. Whether we like to admit it or not, the one night stands and anonymous hook ups are a part of gay culture and make the events and characters seem more believable. Love the use of a 1978 T-Bird for the MC's mode of transportation. One of the old "land yachts" that Detroit produced so prolifically and which sadly are now just a memory (like my dad's 1971 Ford LTD with vinyl top). The story is very fast paced as we ride along with the MC while he unearths what is really going on with these so-called import/export tech companies. The friendship which develops at the end was kind of a surprise and I'm curious to see if more develops there in future series installments. Once you read the book; like me you will anxiously be waiting for the next one in the series"

  • Slater is the type of character a mother would want to wrap her arms around and hold tight he's a bit complex in his emotions even though he tries to hide it all beneath a gruff exterior (what's with all that slapping around?) and booze (that's going to catch up with him, even though he has 'rules' about drinking ... when he awakes without knowing how he got to bed, that's a problem). He has lots of people who care about him, including his ex-boyfriend, but he's not an emotional guy ... more like act and then think. I like that he's unabashedly who he is he offers no excuses. I'm glad a few people see through him and that ultimately (in the next book), he actually lets them inside - or at least is working on it. I believe there are probably a lot of men like him (both hetero & gay) I like that the author is not afraid to let this man be who he is. Rubs me the wrong way at times, but being a hetero female, I'm sure I don't quite get the sleeping around part. Then again, I think the author actually explains it quite well human physical contact without the emotional part. I like that the author has offset Slater's character with horticulture evidently, there are lots of beautiful plants in LA and Slater always notices them. This is definately a multi-faceted character and I'm curious to see where the author will take him in the future. I just hope he continues being who he is this is a different M/M character than the usual tropes. Well done!
  • Slater is the quintessential 'bad boy' protagonist. And I so enjoyed the ride. Really easy to get lost in this fast paced mystery that has plenty of fun twists and turns, hot sex, and a peek into LA's darker side.

    I highly recommend!
  • Great poolside or beach reading. The protagonist is sleazy, but is revealed to have heart in the end. Follow his adventures through LA neighborhoods, high and low. A real page turner!
  • This book is a page turner. Its fast and breezy writing style is a delight. And best of all, the mystery is a real surprise.
