The role of intelligence in US government operations has changed dramatically and is now more critical than ever to domestic security and foreign policy. This authoritative and highly researched book written by Jeffrey T. Richelson provides a detailed overview of America's vast intelligence empire, from its organizations and operations to its management structure. Drawing from a multitude of sources, including hundreds of official documents, The US Intelligence Community allows students to understand the full scope of intelligence organizations and activities, and gives valuable support to policymakers and military operations.

The seventh edition has been fully revised to include a new chapter on the major issues confronting the intelligence community, including secrecy and leaks, domestic spying, and congressional oversight, as well as revamped chapters on signals intelligence and cyber collection, geospatial intelligence, and open sources. The inclusion of more maps, tables and photos, as well as electronic briefing books on the book's Web site, makes The US Intelligence Community an even more valuable and engaging resource for students.

"It was not as good as the earlier versions.
It contained too many personnel flow charts and not enough interesting information as previous editions had.
Richelson's sources have probably dried up and this is all he can provide to the tax paying public."

The US Intelligence Community Jeffrey T Richelson 9780813349183 Books Reviews

  • One reason I purchased this book was to learn if a mechanism were in place within the elephantine bureaucracy of the Federal government to detect, and respond to, the events of 911. After slogging through the excruciatingly detailed descriptions of the organizations mentioned in this book, I was unable to determine if there was.

This book is detailed, precise, and comprehensive; it's tedious and overwhelming to read. But the devil is in the details! Examination of the organization of the 25th Air Force on pages 98 and 99 was cumbersome. Listed under AFTAC PATRICK AFB FL is "DET 460 BELSON AFB AK". There is no Belson AFB in Alaska or anywhere. But there is a Detachment 460 in Building 2681 at Eielson AFB southeast of Fairbanks, Alaska. The source of this chart is listed as Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Agency (AFISRA). Did AFISRA not catch a mistake on proof reading or is this disinformation?

Could an adversary read this book and then, based upon their new-found knowledge of the US intelligence community, pull off a 911? Could an adversary read this book, lean about a particular organization, and then penetrate it? Can an adversary read this book and then develop a plan to use our intelligence bureaucracy against itself?

This book is monumental and will serve as an authoritative reference. Author RIchelson is to be commended for what must have been a lot of hard work in writing it. This book is an excellent start to understanding the US intelligence community. What makes this book so valuable is that it is a wealth of knowledge presented in an unbiased, factual, and historic manner.
  • I must say this is the first book that I bought from Mr. Richelson and one of the thoroughly researched and carefully documented studies I ever seen. In this 20-chapter volume the author explored with clarity the complexity, full scope, role and activities of the vast US intelligence apparatus.

The amount of the research is impressive, the author ferreting out as many details as possible and Mr. Richelson cannot be blamed for some missing aspects in the presentation of US world of espionage.
While the presentation of SIGINT&COMINT or cyber collection organizations and operations is truly impressive, I found the HUMINT chapter somehow less satisfactory. I think that Mr. Richelson could reveal more about dozens of espionage cases in the recent years both in Russia and US.

The text is well supported by 27 black and white photos, 17 tables and 60+ figures. There is also a list of acronyms and abbreviations and a useful index.
If you want to gain a fuller understanding of the US world of intelligence, it is highly unlikely you will ever find a better record in print.Recommended!
  • The quintessential source on this topic, as have been previous editions of the book. The author, who died in 2017, shall be missed.
  • Perfect book to help as an introduction
  • Excellent
  • It was not as good as the earlier versions.
It contained too many personnel flow charts and not enough interesting information as previous editions had.
Richelson's sources have probably dried up and this is all he can provide to the tax paying public.
  • Hmmm. It depends on what you need from it... Not exactly a comprehensive textbook, more of a semi-comprehensive lay down of the major intel organizations, their functions, roles, and relationships. A solid reference book.
