After 20 years working for Pervenio Corp chasing bounties and extinguishing rebellions throughout the solar system, he's on a routine pickup job hunting a wealthy offworlder heir who ran away from home. But when a mad scientist gets his hands on the boy, Malcolm finds himself caught up in a twisted plot to develop working androids.

Join Malcolm on a mission gone awry in this prequel novella to USA Today best seller Rhett C. Bruno's Children of Titan series.

"Ahh! Malcolm Graves. (Think: Harrison Ford in 'Blade Runner') The grizzled old boozer of a Collector has Pervenio Corp.'s orders to recover fugitive baby gangster Jimmy Fring. Then an easy nab-and-nip-out goes sideways, Fring gets grabbed by a bigger fish further up the food chain, and Malcom, whose bloodshot eyes and creaking joints belie his resourcefulness, has a collateral mission. I don't do spoilers, but I promise that readers will get sucked in to the story, and blown away by Rhett C. Bruno's tight plotting, cinematically described action, and gritty characterization of the Collector, Malcolm Graves. Don't miss this fabulous little prequel to the Titanborn world."

  • Dystopian sci-fi master, Rhett C. Bruno, dishes out a solid prequel to Titanborn in this quick little short-story. This time, he treats us to a tender tale of interplanetary bounty-hunter, Malcom Graves, as he totes his 10-year-old daughter about the solar system. This lasts about tens minutes, of course, before Malcom stumbles onto a bevy of horrors dredged out of the darkest hole of plausible sci-fi futures coming soon to a reality near you. The story is chilling as it is provocative, especially when it picks up full steam midway for a plunge straight into a nightmare form hell. Enjoy!
  • The dying Mother and Son helping is a universal theme plus Sci-Fi is more of a soap opera than sci-fi action, but still a good prequel to the other book. It's good for what it is. RC Bray is awesome like always. I can't wait to listen to his upcoming Telephone book reading. ;-)
  • Malcolm Graves worked as a Corporate Collector for Pervenio Corp as sort of a detective/bounty hunter. He was usually contracted for less mundane jobs, but this time the son of a wealthy businessman Pervenio might want to do business with ran away and needed to be brought back. What should have been a simple job, returning Jimmy Fring home, was getting more complicated.

Malcolm finally tracked Jimmy down and was moving in for the capture. A man in a white lab coat and an exceptional looking guard were ushering a few people into a transport ship. To bide his time questioning the official who was apparently selling them, he had to allow the transport to escape. But what he learns is that they are from a robotics firm experimenting on test subjects provided by the corrupt official! Will Malcolm find Jimmy in time to save his life? Or will he be too late this time?

This was an enjoyable book. The snarky attitude of Malcolm Graves made it a fun read! The story line moved along rapidly, suspense lurking on every page! I immediately sought out the other two books in this series because it was that good! Highly recommended, and enough here to convince the reader that it’s worth picking up a copy to see where this story is headed!
  • Rhett C. Bruno is a great writer. I am not sure how I got to become a big fan of his so fast, but I know good writing when I see it, and probably one of Rhett's great strengths is the near-flawless execution of short fiction. The Collector is Book 0, or a prequel, to the Titanborn series. I have read the entire series and I loved it. I highly recommend this series. Since Rhett originally wrote it, it has been through major revisions and updates, expanded by a volume, and if it is even possible it is now better than when it was originally written. This is a set of stories that will really have lasting impact on you.

The Collector is a vignette story, billed as a novelette, about a character from Titanborn, Malcolm Graves. Graves is a Collector for Pervenio Corp. He is sort of a futuristic detective and hit man, a bounty hunter, but certainly a corporate problem solver for Pervenio. In this story, he goes after a young man named Jimmy, with too much money and not enough sense, who wants to get away from his over-indulged life. Well, he stumbles into the wrong crowd, a crowd lead by a villain who is creating synthetic humans. Or is he?

Malcolm is a very Dashiel Hammet-like character, and he is full of grit and flawed realism, and he is really very interesting. If I had to classify the genre I would call it science-fiction detective noir. One of Rhett's great strengths is his ability to bring characters and stories to life. He does a fantastic job at it in this short story / novelette. Gritty realism characterizes this story.

What do I like best about Rhett? Well, his writing in Titanborn is a little dark and gritty, aka The Expanse, or Firefly. Full of real-life people doing real-life things, not just swashbuckling derring-do.
This is an extremely well written, well edited and well executed story. Seamless, quality, and a wonderfully satisfying read, full of twists and surprises, a great story line, great plot and sub plots, just everything you want in one place.

I would recommend this story for anyone who might be interested in the Titanborn series, or want a good sampling of Rhett's writing. Technically it could be considered space opera, but I would classify it as excellent Science-fiction. The Collector is like the libretto to the play It sets the stage extremely well for what we get in the Titanborn series.
If there is one thing you can count on with Rhett C. Bruno it is excellent writing. He is extremely descriptive and able to paint worlds and real people in them as if he has drawn them from life. His quality control is superb in the execution of his work; with near zero publication errors and outstanding professional flow, language, grammar, and syntax. His realistic dialogue is excellent.

Overall this is a five star work, a great introductory story, and a very enjoyable read.
  • I don't think it's possible for me to dislike any story that has Malcolm Graves in. I loved reading about him before the events taking place in Titanborn. By now even though I've only read a couple of books that feature him and this world (along with this prequel novella), he's turning into one of my favorite characters ever.

And although this novella is only 60 pages it doesn't take away what a thrilling read The Collector is. I loved it.

  • This short story is more of what I expected when I picked up Titanborn, a fun space opera that is well written and well done characters. If you've read and enjoyed the Titanborn series, you will certainly enjoy this one as well. If you have not yet read the others, this is a good introduction to the Titanborn universe.
